Helping kids keep their bank details safe

4 min read

Technology is an everyday part of life for most kids and teens. That’s why helping kids stay safe when banking online is so important. Parents can help kids understand how to keep their personal details safe, as well as help them avoid common scams.

Here are some starting points:

Be sure your kids know to never share PINs or login details

It can be difficult for kids to grasp the difference between bank details they can share with others and those they need to keep private.

Let your child know why it’s okay for them to provide their BSB and account number to an employer or another trusted person. But make sure they understand why they should never share online banking logins, debit card details or One Time Pins (OTPs) with anyone.

If your child lets you know their Suncorp Bank account or card security may be compromised, they or you should contact us immediately.

Tell kids to be mindful of how they access their accounts online

Encourage your children to only access their bank accounts on devices they trust. In almost all cases, that should be through their own phone or computer.

And even when they’re using personal devices, remind them to always make a habit of logging out of secure apps and authenticated sites, like the Suncorp Bank App and Suncorp Bank Internet Banking

Help kids choose safe passwords and remind them to update them regularly

Strong passwords are one of the best defences against unwanted account intrusions.

Help your child choose a password that’s easy to remember but hard to guess. This isn’t just important for kids – everyone should ensure their passwords are a strong first defence.

Where possible, show your kids how to use ‘2-Factor Authentication’

In addition to helping them create their own strong passwords, you can show your kids how to set up and use what’s called ‘2-factor authentication’ (2FA) if this is available.

You may already be familiar with this type of login even if the ‘2-factor’ name is new.

With 2FA, your password is your first ‘authentication factor’. The second will often be a One Time PIN that is only valid for a short time after you receive it. This is usually sent via SMS or through a secure mobile app.

At Suncorp Bank, customers can log into their online banking using 2FA by registering for the Suncorp Bank Secured App

Teach your children about the warning signs of scams and fraud

Scammers’ fraudulent text messages and social media posts can reach anyone. Take time to educate your kids about common scams. Warn them that if they think something might be a scam, it probably is.

The Australian Government’s ScamWatch website is a valuable resource for information about different types of scams and how to stay protected.

Check in with your kids regularly about their bank accounts

Teaching your kids about being safe online isn’t a one-off activity. Talk to them regularly about what accounts they have and how they’re accessing them.

Kids and teens can choose from a range of Suncorp Bank accounts. Whether they’re looking to get their first debit card or saving up for something big, they have plenty of options with Suncorp Bank.
